What happens during my acupuncture treatment?
Your first consultation and treatment usually takes about 75 minutes. Subsequent treatments take 45-55 minutes. Your full medical case history is taken (including details of current conditions, signs and symptoms, past illnesses, family medical history and any medications you are taking). This is followed by a Chinese body diagnosis, and tongue and pulse diagnoses – all of which help build a comprehensive picture of your internal health.
On the basis of this information, I will work out a treatment plan for you. Everyone is unique and the acupuncture points will be selected specifically to address your individual needs. The needles are inserted and left in for 20 minutes, during which time your pulses will be taken again to see how the treatment is progressing.
Massage
On occasion, particularly for musculo-skeletal conditions, therapeutic massage or Chinese Massage (tui na) techniques may be employed before the acupuncture is given to help relax the body and improve the flow of qi before needling. More on massage
Moxa
Sometimes moxa, a herb - artemisia vulgaris, is used to warm a needle or is applied directly to the skin to warm an acupuncture point.
Cupping
Cupping may be used to help treat musculo-skeletal disorders or to expel the symptoms of a cold or flu. It involves creating a vacuum in cups (made from glass) and placing them on the affected area of the body. The suction allows stuck energy to be released; restoration of the free flow of qi relieves the tension in the area.
Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture
Special acupuncture points on the ear may be used in conjunction with points on the body. For example, in treatments to help with giving up smoking.
How many treatments will I need?
It is difficult to say how many treatments you will need before you have had a consultation. For most people a course of treatments is advisable, probably weekly initially then with increasing intervals as the condition improves. In general, chronic, long-standing conditions require a longer course of treatment than acute conditions. But everyone is different. I would usually recommend an initial course of 4 - 6 treatments and we review the situation over time. In some cases, 6 treatments is more than enough, in other cases, it takes longer for resolution of symptoms and to restore good health.

Is Acupuncture safe?
The needles are single-use, sterile and disposable. Adverse effects from acupuncture are rare. Responses to treatment may include tiredness, mild dizziness and minor bruising. Such reactions are generally minor and short lived. |
